SYNOPSIS

The story follows Elesin Oba, the King’s chief horseman, whose sacred responsibility is to commit ritual suicide after the death of the Alaafin (king). According to Yoruba tradition, this sacrifice ensures the king’s peaceful passage into the ancestral world and preserves spiritual balance within the community.

On the night meant for this solemn transition, Elesin becomes distracted by earthly desires and delays fulfilling his duty. His hesitation coincides with interference from British colonial officers, who misunderstand the ritual and intervene to stop it. Their actions disrupt a deeply rooted cultural obligation, triggering shame, conflict, and devastating consequences for Elesin, his family, and the entire kingdom.

When Elesin fails to complete his sacred task, the burden of honour and cosmic balance shifts dramatically — leading to a tragic outcome that questions duty, leadership, masculinity, and the destructive impact of colonial intrusion.

THE ROLE

In Elesin Oba: The King’s Horseman, Shaffy Bello plays Iyaloja, the revered Mother of the Market and one of the most powerful moral voices within the Yoruba community. Iyaloja serves as a spiritual and cultural authority, representing tradition, collective wisdom, and societal accountability. As custodian of communal values, she guides and reminds Elesin of the sacred responsibility he carries as the King’s Horseman. Her character embodies discipline, honour, and the preservation of cultural order.

Throughout the film, Iyaloja acts as both supporter and conscience — celebrating Elesin’s status while also warning him against allowing earthly pleasures to distract him from his divine duty. When events begin to unravel, her presence becomes central to expressing the community’s grief, disappointment, and sense of betrayal. Shaffy Bello delivers the role with commanding gravitas, blending regal composure with emotional depth. Her performance anchors the cultural weight of the story, portraying Iyaloja not merely as a community leader but as the symbolic voice of tradition itself.
